Darryl McCray, known by his tagging name, “Cornbread,” is a graffiti artist from Philadelphia, credited with being the first modern graffiti artist. Darryl McCray was born in North Philadelphia in 1953. During the 1960's, he started writing his name on the back of his t-shirts, and then on walls at school and across the city. The movement spread within his friends and then to New York and blossomed into the modern graffiti movement, which reached started to peak in the U.S. in the 1980’s and then spread to Europe. Cornbread started it all but most famously tagged an elephant at the zoo and a jet airplane, decades before graffiti became the movement it is known to be today. The more you learn about this guy, the more fascinating he becomes. He has earned his nickname Cornbread the Legend.
