GATS PTV

SAN FRANCISCO // CALIFORNIA

GATS, which stands for Graffiti Against the System, is a multidisciplinary artist from the PTV crew known for his totemic works that challenge ideas about ownership, authority, and power. GATS emerged from the Bay Area graffiti scene in the early 1990s. His tags are inspired by the aesthetics of punk and hardcore and artists like Ed Templeton and Gee Vaucher. In the mid-2000s, he took on the name GATS, painting the trademark masked face with blank eyes on buildings, walls and stickers worldwide. The character is an omnipresent witness for the artist, intended to remind us that we are not alone. GATS also paints his icon on all kinds of found and personal objects, including skateboards, books, and tools.
