SANE SMITH GRAFFITI STICKERS MUSEUM

SANE SMITH

BROOKLYN // NEW YORK

SANE and SMITH are brothers and graffiti writers from New York who were early pioneers in the booming 1980’s era of graffiti, as the subway system became graffiti-free and writers were pushed out onto the streets. Their solution was to explore in search of new and exciting new spots. In the summer of ’88, SANE and SMITH spent a late night painting their names on one of the outside pillars of the Brooklyn Bridge. Using large house-painting brushes, they pushed bucket paint into the craggy surface for hours while balanced on a foot-wide catwalk, defying a 120-foot fall into the East River with one miscalculation. It turned out that the big block letters across the National Historic Landmark got far more of a reaction than they had ever anticipated. Unfortunately SANE died years later, leaving his brother SMITH to carry on the legacy, a duo that remains never to be forgotten.
