Smokey Bear is an American campaign and advertising icon licensed by the U.S. Forest Service. It is the longest running public service campaign in United States history. The employment of Smokey Bear is meant to educate the public about the dangers of unplanned human-caused wildfires. The first campaign began in 1944 featuring Smokey and the slogan "Remember... Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires" was introduced in 1947 and has been associated with Smokey Bear ever since. Barry McGee “Twist” famously acquired the last remaining supplies of the official Smokey the Bear name badge labels, giving them to friends and crewmates, as well tagging on them himself, thus introducing these labels to the graffiti and street art community where it has been highly sought after ever since.
